House dust mites

House dust mites

The house dust mites (Dermatophagoides) are a species of mites that belong to the arachnida class. Worldwide, 49 species of the Pyroglyphidae family have been proven, of which 13 live in house dust, only six or seven of them more frequently. However, there are other types of mite that can live in houses, and these are particularly numerous in the tropics. The original habitat of the house dust mites are birds’ nests; from there they moved to human housing and have spread worldwide.

Behaviour:
House dust mites love warm temperatures and high humidity. They therefore find ideal conditions in beds, extractor fans and sometimes also in supplies such as flour and sugar.

Damage/illnesses:
House dust mites, their empty shells and their excrement have been proven to cause allergic asthma.

Control:
Carefully spray cracks and grooves in particular with Neocid EXPERT Insect Spray or Neocid EXPERT Spider Control. Vacuum clean frequently. Air beds and mattresses in order to extract their moisture.

Prophylaxis:
Do without carpets in favour of stone flooring.
Wash and hang out bed linen frequently because the cold and sunlight kill mites.
