Food moths / pantry moths

Food moths / pantry moths

Food moths or pantry moths is the colloquial term given to various species of the Pyralidae family which often occur as storage food pests.

Behaviour:
The larvae of the Indian meal moth (also called pantry moth) attacks dried fruit and other food. The fully grown caterpillar then leaves its feeding place in order to seek out a protected area to pupate.

Damage/illnesses:
Food is infested and becomes unfit for consumption. Germs are brought in and spread. As a result of the larvae excrement, feeding grounds for fungi and bacteria also develop (pathogenic germs).

Control:
Destroy infested supplies. Clear out drawers and cupboards and spray with Neocid EXPERT Insect Spray. After 24 hours clean thoroughly and put food back again. Set up Neocid EXPERT kitchen moth traps.

Prophylaxis:
Seal food in tins.
Install fly screens on the windows to stop females flying in.
